Budapest, años cuarenta. Los judíos comienzan a ser pasto de los excesos nazis y se ven obligados a buscar una escapatoria del horror del holocausto. Un diplomático de la embajada española, conocido como el Ángel de Budapest, hace posible que muchas familias hebreas logren el objetivo de salir del país y asentarse en otros puntos de Europa. Edit, Daniel y su hijo David, descendientes de judíos sefarditas, obtienen el visado para viajar a España y logran asentarse en la Costa Dorada, donde, amparados por una organización subyacente creada en los inicios de la represión judía, crean un negocio floreciente y se instalan en la tranquila vida social de la ciudad. El joven David, educado en la Gran Sinagoga del Danubio, sufre continuamente por no poder practicar los ritos, cultos y ceremonias de la religión judía, prohibida por el Gobierno franquista, por lo que cada vez tiene más claro que su futuro, siempre ligado a sus creencias, estará lejos de España. Tras completar sus estudios universitarios en Londres, David acaba por integrarse en el engranaje diplomático del recién creado Estado de Israel. Años más tarde, un atentado con carta bomba en la embajada israelí en Londres cambia para siempre la vida de Rachel, única hija de David. A partir de ese momento, la joven consagra su vida a desenmascarar a los autores del hecho, sumergiéndose para ello en el complejo mundo de las relaciones diplomáticas, aunque en su caso este universo servirá fundamentalmente como pantalla para ocultar su pertenencia a los servicios de inteligencia.
