Oscar Wisting (1871-1936) var Roald Amundsens mest betrodde og trofaste medarbeider, og de to sammen ble de første som nådde både Sydpolen og Nordpolen.Wisting deltok på Roald Amundsens ekspedisjon til Sydpolen fra 1910 til 1912. Han var med i kjernegruppen, Sydpolpartiet, som nådde målet 14. desember 1911.Han var mønstret som førstestyrmann på Maud gjennom Nordøst-passasjen 1918 til 1922. I tillegg hadde han ansvar for stuing av forsyninger og var kokk, bibliotekar, lege og proviantforvalter ombord på Maud.Amundsen gav Wisting denne attesten: Jo verre det så ut, jo bedre likte han sig. Og gikk det på livet løs, var han først i sitt ess.
