A conquista do poder no Império Tzarista, por operários, soldados e camponeses dirigida pelo Partido Bolchevique deu-se com pouco derramamento de sangue. Os socialistas-revolucionários de esquerda participaram do primeiro governo, apoiado nos sovietes. O Império Russo fora golpeado duramente pela guerra interimperialista de 1914-1918, para a qual não estava preparado. Dos seus mais de cem milhões de habitantes, dois milhões morreram e cinco milhões foram feridos e inutilizados no conflito. Em 1918, com o fim do conflito mundial, o apenas surgido Estado operário sofreu terrível ofensiva imperialista por parte da Inglaterra, França, Estados Unidos, Itália, China, Alemanha, Império Otomano, Polônia, Romênia, Áustria, Tcheco-Eslováquia, Finlândia, Grécia, que financiaram as forças contra-revolucionárias internas. Esperava-se esmagar a revolução que ameaçava se espraiar pelo mundo. Sob a direção de León Trotsky (1879-1940), construiu-se o Exército Vermelho. Com as sucessivas vitórias das armas soviéticas e a ameaça da revolução na Alemanha, Áustria, Itália, Hungria, etc., os estados imperialistas aceitaram a derrota e impuseram o bloqueio econômico à URSS, a Cortina de Ferro de Winston Churchill. A Guerra Civil vergastou o jovem Estado operário de 2018 a 2023.
