'The Wrong Color of Shakespeare' is een verzameling fictieve verhalen van zwarte mensen in een kleine Braziliaanse gemeenschap van Duitse en Italiaanse immigranten, genaamd Jararacumbach, een samengestelde naam die de hybride van de Braziliaanse slang (Jarararaca) en de Duitse rivier (Bach) suggereert. Van de geboorte tot de dood leren deze Afrikaanse Braziliaanse onderdanen hoe ze met de immigranten moeten omgaan, hoe ze hun voedsel moeten eten, hoe ze hun taal moeten spreken, hoe ze hun lessen moeten leren in hun seminarie, om zo hun racistische gedrag en discriminerende houdingen op afstand te houden, wanneer dat mogelijk is. Wanneer dat niet mogelijk was, geven ze toe aan de hardheid van het leven of overwinnen ze het, niet altijd op vreedzame wijze. Black Bento is het belangrijkste mannelijke personage in de meeste verhalen.
