A lo largo de la Guerra de los Diez Años (1868-1878) en Cuba, no solo emergieron proyectos y prescripciones abolicionistas desde ambos lados del conflicto colonial, también se legisló sobre la condición del esclavo como la de un bien a embargar. El libro de la historiadora María Elena Meneses Muro constituye el primer estudio sistemático de la administración de los esclavos retenidos por la capitanía general de la isla como parte de la política de expropiaciones a los individuos acusados de infidencia. ¿Cómo se asumió la posesión de los esclavos por las estructuras administrativas durante el conflicto bélico?, ¿cuáles fueron las lógicas procedimentales en la distribución y modos de empleos?, ¿qué intereses se movieron en los entresijos de la gestión de esclavos?, son algunas de las interrogantes desbrozadas por la autora. El procesamiento riguroso de fuentes documentales, en particular extraídas del fondo Bienes Embargados del Archivo Nacional de Cuba, posibilita develar aristas de estudio y definir problemáticas relativas a tópicos medulares del proceso como el status jurídico del esclavo expropiado y su condición real, el movimiento geográfico y los espacios laborales asignados, la sofisticación de controles administrativos, e incluso, a modo de exhortación sugerente, se identifican posibles márgenes de acción o estrategias de esclavos expropiados y familiares para interpretar y usar a su favor los recursos legales. 10
