They inscribe themselves, their subjective understanding of the source text, and the norms of the target culture into their translations, addressing specific target audiences with particular identity characteristics. The philological utopia of a ‘faithful’ translation—that is, a translation that reproduces the source text without any deviation—long obscured our view of the hierarchical and gender-normative practices of the craft. The conference volume, available in open access, focuses on gender and diversity and explores the interrelationships between translation and gender in the Early Modern Period.
