Kurt Knispel, ventidue anni, apprendente di officina nato in un villaggio dei Sudeti, aveva distrutto 101 carri nemici in venti mesi. L’ufficiale che teneva il diario di guerra del battaglione e istruiva materialmente le pratiche di decorazione ha detto qualcosa di molto più inquietante: nessuna proposta fu mai inoltrata. Questo libro segue un uomo che non ha lasciato una riga scritta, da un paese cecoslovacco diventato tedesco senza spostarsi, attraverso Barbarossa. Kursk, Caen e l’Ungheria, fino a una fossa comune dietro il muro di una chiesa morava, riaperta nel 2013. È la biografia di un soldato e l’autopsia della leggenda che gli è stata costruita addosso. È un’indagine sul perché il dopoguerra ha avuto bisogno di un eroe della Wehrmacht che rifiutava la 'Kreuz'.
