La battaglia che si combatté sull’altopiano di Asiago tra il novembre e il dicembre del 1917 non fu un semplice episodio di contenimento, paragonabile a quanto accadeva nello stesso periodo sul monte Grappa o sulle rive del Piave. Fu invece un attacco austriaco - preparato in modo frettoloso e frammentario - che portò con sé tutti i segni dell’improvvisazione e della precarietà. Fu, per usare un termine che potrebbe sembrare irriverente, una sorta di 'creazione estemporanea', messa in scena, in fretta e furia, tra il 28 ottobre - giorno in cui i comandi delle Potenze Centrali presero atto che nessun’altra offensiva organizzata, sarebbe potuta iniziare prima del 10 novembre, quando il fronte Grappa-Piave si fosse stabilizzato. In quella medesima data, si offrì al Feldmaresciallo Conrad von Hötzendorf il 'tanto desiderato' permesso di attaccare, e non solo di seguire il ripiegamento italiano. La Storia 'ufficiale' austriaca 1 descriverà la battaglia di novembre-dicembre 1917 come una serie di 'inseguimenti ravvicinati' (Nachstoßen) condotti contro le truppe italiane in ritirata. Ma fu molto di più: fu un vero e proprio piano d’attacco, studiato certamente senza preparazione, ma pur sempre un piano, che rivelava le ambizioni e al tempo stesso i limiti dell’economia di un impero ormai logorato da tre anni di guerra.
