Nous montrerons que chaque époque et chaque peuple eurent leur façon spéciale de penser, comme ils eurent leurs croyances, leur morale et leur droit ; qu’il n’y eut jamais de principes universels et absolus, mais seulement des principes d’une valeur relative.Ce n’est qu’en suivant ainsi le développement de l’humanité dans toutes ses phases, et tenant soigneusement compte de l’influence des milieux, de la race, de l’hérédité, de l’éducation, en un mot de tous les modificateurs de l’homme, qu’on peut arriver à concevoir clairement comment se sont formées les idées et les aptitudes d’un peuple, comment il a graduellement acquis sa structure et ses fonctions, et embrasser ainsi dans leur succession et leurs causes la série des événements qui constituent l’histoire.”
