Mauldin
I am your child’s brain, and I work like a radar that’s switched on and has no off button. While you read this line, I’ve already reported the hum of the lamp, the tag rubbing the back of your child’s neck, and the chair someone dragged two rooms away. I don’t choose it: everything reaches me, and all of it at once. That meltdown when your child got home from school wasn’t because they didn’t want to do their homework. It was because, after six hours of noise, lights, and people asking things of them, my sensory battery hit zero. That refusal to put on the shirt wasn’t stubbornness: I reported the tag as sandpaper against the skin. Almost all of my storms start this way, with an overload no one can see from the outside. In Loud Days, Intense Worlds, I speak directly to you, the mother, the father, the grandmother, whoever is in the house the day the afternoon turns hard. I explain how my radar is built, why my filter is full of holes, and how my battery drains. Then I tell you what reaches me through each of my eight channels:The eyes that bring me too much lightThe ears that won’t give me silenceThe skin that warns me about everythingThe nose and the mouth that inspect every smell and every biteThe balance that warns me when the ground movesThe body map that keeps erasing itselfThe signals from inside that come in too quietAnd at the end, I show you what happens when everything comes in at once, which environments overwhelm your child, how to create spaces that don’t flood me, what wakes up, organizes, and calms your child, and what doesn’t help, even when it’s done with love. You’ll also find a Scenario Guide for the hardest moments and a page to start with today, if you have nothing left to read the whole book. What I describe is meant for children ages 4 to 12. I’m not here to give your child a clinical name or a list of symptoms: what your child feels is real, that’s how the world reaches them. The day they’re believed without an argument, I stop spending my charge on insisting and have something left for everything else. This is Book 2 of the four-book Intense Brains series, and it can be read without having read the first. Welcome to my loud days.
