Die Familie der extrazellulären ligninolytischen Enzyme umfasst in der Regel Ligninperoxidasen, Laccasen, Manganperoxidasen, vielseitige Peroxidasen und andere akzessorische Enzyme. Von diesen Enzymen spielt die MnP vermutlich die wichtigste Rolle beim Ligninabbau. Manganperoxidase, ein ubiquitäres Enzym unter ligninolytischen Pilzen, ist ein extrazelluläres, hämhaltiges Enzym, von dem bekannt ist, dass es die Oxidation von Mn2+ zu Mn3+ in einer Reaktion katalysiert, die einen geeigneten Manganchelator erfordert. Dieses Enzym katalysiert die Oxidation von Mn2+ zu Mn3+, das wiederum eine Vielzahl von phenolischen Substraten oxidieren kann, darunter Lignin-Modellverbindungen. 3 Pilze wurden aus Bodenproben aus verschiedenen Regionen in Bangalore isoliert. Die isolierten Pilzstämme wurden mittels Plattentest auf die Produktion von Manganperoxidase untersucht. Aspergillus sps VV01 wurde als bester Manganperoxidase-Produzent ausgewählt.
