Wraz z rosnącą konkurencją ze strony gospodarki uniwersalnej, producenci stają przed wyzwaniem dostarczania nowych produktów dostosowanych do potrzeb klienta szybciej niż dotychczas. W celu skrócenia cyklu projektowania i produkcji opracowano kilka technologii znanych pod wspólną nazwą Rapid Manufacturing (RM). Koncepcja projektowania dla środowiska (Design for Environment - DFE) zharmonizowała zagadnienia projektowania z problematyką środowiskową. Niniejsze badania koncentrują się na metodologii Design for Recycling (DFR) lub Design for Environment (DFE) dla Rapid Manufacturing. Metodologia ta jest stosowana na etapie projektowania wyrobu w celu zwiększenia procentu możliwości recyklingu i zmniejszenia wpływu na środowisko. Idea ta może być również zastosowana do produktów, które osiągnęły koniec cyklu życia i zmiany projektu tych produktów tak, aby ich recykling był łatwiejszy niż obecnie.
