Już w połowie XIX wieku wielu lekarzy zajmowało się pojęciem „medycyny społecznej' i analizowało wpływ industrializacji oraz urbanizacji na zdrowie (por. Rössler, 2013, s. 23). Obecnie psychiatrii środowiskowej stawia sobie za zadanie postrzeganie podejść psychospołecznych i neurobiologicznych nie jako odrębnych, jak dotychczas, ale jako powiązane ze sobą perspektywy. W centrum uwagi znajduje się „podejście oparte na wzmocnieniu' oraz badanie np. procesów podejmowania decyzji, samoświadomości i regulacji afektów przy pomocy technik multimodalnych. Niemniej jednak należy zawsze brać pod uwagę indywidualność, autonomię, (inter)subiektywność oraz osadzenie społeczne każdej osoby (por. Kumbier, Haack, Hoff 2013, s. 45).
