Se oye sonar una gaita retrata sin un ápice de acidez la vida de una saga familiar asturiana, en un período convulso que abarca desde finales del siglo XIX a la primera etapa de la guerra civil. Es un relato amable, de héroes corrientes que sin aspavientos caminan hacia adelante, pese a sus durísimas circunstancias históricas y personales. Se trata de un relato híbrido en el que la autora impregna de lirismo una narración que tiene tanto de épica como de costumbrista. Mercedes, en esta su segunda novela, constata su larga trayectoria poética utilizando el lenguaje sobrio y popular como instrumento artístico, lleno de símbolos recurrentes de la asturianía que, como transmite el propio título, evocan nostalgia y frescura.
