Os povos da bacia do Mediterrâneo partilham formas de viver e praticar a sua fé, que resistem às divisões religiosas e às manipulações políticas. A paisagem religiosa do Mediterrâneo Oriental é mais complexa e é marcada por formas de convergência interconfessional. Esta tese é um olhar antropológico para uma leitura das mudanças políticas e culturais que afectam os santuários e as transformações recentes dos ritos em torno de dois santuários ambíguos. Embora esta tese preste atenção a dois estudos de caso em particular, nomeadamente Aya Yorgi, na Turquia, e Mar Jirjes al Batiyeh, no Líbano, recorre a uma investigação multidisciplinar para estabelecer um contexto mais alargado. Estes locais são explorados em profundidade através de uma análise qualitativa, tomando simultaneamente nota de trabalhos paralelos relativos a outros locais, como Lod, Edirne e Atenas. A partir da procura de espiritualidade em torno dos sítios dedicados a São Jorge, as minhas descobertas, que incluem aspirações espirituais e seculares, sugerem uma desconstrução de pólos de significado como sagrado e profano, movimento e lugar, religião e secularidade, comunidade e indivíduo.
