Coaching For Better Learning
Student Textbook: GED Science Test Promoting Higher-Order Reading Comprehension While Preparing Students for the GED Science Test. This textbook prepares learners for the GED Science test as well as science requirements for Career and Technical Education (CTE) admission. The exercises and answer keys in this textbook cover three main components of the GED Science Test: 1) Reading for Meaning in Science, 2) Designing and Interpreting Science Experiments, and 3) Using Numbers and Graphics in Science. The activities also align with the scientific reasoning, data analysis, and problem-solving skills assessed on the GED Science Test. The textbook is organized into three (3) main sections, eight (8) chapters, and twenty-two (22) interactive lessons, including one practice test. It applies Bloom’s Taxonomy’s six levels of learning (Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating) to engage learners in active, rigorous science tasks that build scientific vocabulary, scientific reasoning, data interpretation, and critical thinking skills.Furthermore, the book teaches learners to apply the SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review) reading framework to improve their scientific reading comprehension and recall. The reading and science activities teach and assess the following skills:Identifying claims, findings, and supporting evidence Analyzing scientific information, investigations, and processes Understanding scientific terms, symbols, concepts, and relationships between ideas Comparing information from different science sources Making inferences and drawing evidence-based conclusions and predictions Interpreting data, visuals, and scientific graphics Applying science formulas, statistics, probability, and counting Designing and evaluating science investigations and explaining variables and possible errors Presenting and explaining scientific information using numbers, symbols, and graphicsUsing these frameworks, the textbook helps learners complete science tasks that mimic the rigor of the GED Science Test. It serves as an instructional guide to help students become more active, strategic, and purposeful readers of scientific information. Through these activities, learners improve comprehension and apply their science and reasoning skills in academic and workplace settings.Indeed, this textbook equips your students with the academic vocabulary, scientific reasoning, data analysis, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills they need to thrive. As they progress through the book, they’ll gain valuable insights to navigate the complexities of scientific information, investigations, data, and evidence. The CBL Team
