Die ›Symmetrie‹ beziehen Novick und Novick auf die fatale Korrespondenz zwischen der Leidenssucht als verhüllter Suche nach grenzüberschreitender Macht (›Macht durch Leiden‹) und als verunglückter Sehnsucht nach Beziehung und ihrem Pendant im Quälenmüssen des Anderen. Die ›Symmetrie‹ bezieht sich aber auch auf die Antithese im Inneren: Zwischen der Grausamkeit des inneren Richters und dem Gequältwerden des scham- und schulderfüllten Selbst, was Freud moralischen Masochismus nannte. Diese Symmetrie mag sich in ebenso verhängnisvoller Art in der Beziehung mit dem Therapeuten und Analytiker wiederholen, wenn der innere Konflikt sich in sadomasochistischer Verstrickung wiederum veräußerlicht und oft durch fehlerhafte Technik bestätigt wird.
