Er präsentiert dazu zwei aufeinander aufbauende theoretische Ansätze, indem er mathematikdidaktische, philosophische und soziologische Theorien miteinander verbindet. Seine Analyseergebnisse münden in konkreten Lernumgebungen, deren empirischer Einsatz und die anschließende theoretische Rekonstruktion Bedingungen und (realisierbare) Möglichkeiten von Mathematiklernen verdeutlichen.​
