Many entries in this book are my creations; others are gleanings and adaptations from several languages and cultures. All resonate to my experience.Aphorisms, witticisms, moral tales, and similar insights are akin to philosophy but with two main differences: first, whereas philosophy reaches a point after lengthy preliminaries, aphorisms and their relatives begin with the point and its immediate human application. Second, whereas philosophy narrate in a major key, these entries play on several registers: humor, irony, paradox, and moral insights that modulate the melody of human life.According to one of the aphorisms in this book, some of our ideas fare better in other minds. These have served me well as instruction and consolation. Now I release them in the hope that other minds will make even better use of them.

  • The Spirit Of Spain
    Harold Raley
IntroductionFor centuries Spain has been a country foreigners love to hate and Spaniards hate to love. Yet visitors swarm to it by the millions, seduced by the very things they publicly decry. It may be the most visited and most reviled country in modern times. Few nations have been more studied and probably none more persistently misunderstood. ...

  • Tides Of Fortune

These are tales of fortune and forfeiture, happiness and hazard, love and deceit. Some stories are set in specific times and places but not confined to them. Others arise in the mere vastness of the world and belong anywhere applicable or nowhere definitive. For wherever there is human life, there are the yearnings, dreams, possibilities and impossibilities we call tales and st...

  • TATTLETALEs

A celebrated philosopher once said that in order to understand anything human we must tell a story. He spoke a profound truth, and it is important to understand some of its implications. Art, including musical and literary art, tells us very little about what we are. That kind of information is the business of science, which teaches that we are mammalian animals, first cousins ...

  • Radical and Empirical Reality
    Harold Raley
The essays and lectures that comprise this book reflect decades of work in the United States, Spain, and Spanish America. In no particular chronological sequence, these writings cluster in thematic unity around the innovative concepts of the shared vision of philosophers Ortega y Gasset and Julián Marías. These include, among others, human life as the radical reality, the indis...

  • Memories of Appalachia
    Harold Raley
No one can write our narrative for us, and no one should. For we are the novelists of ourselves, the composers of our personal melody of life. Daily we add pages to our story or notes to our song. Animals, our only flesh and blood companions in this world, are what they are by Nature’s decree, but we humans are who we become primarily by our personal choices. This means that of...

  • Immortal Destiny

Immortal Destiny is the third of a trilogy of books on immortality. In The Light of Eden (2008) Raley invites the reader to a spiritual and intellectual feast featuring the mystery and reality of personhood and culminating in a new theory of human life. A radically new theory of life calls for a radically new theology, the main concepts and implications of which Raley explores ...
