Xenophon
This volume brings together four essential works by the Greek historian and philosopher Xenophon, providing an intimate and multifaceted portrait of Socrates and the intellectual landscape of ancient Athens. In 'Memorabilia', Xenophon offers a spirited defense of his mentor, recounting Socratic dialogues that emphasize the philosopher’s piety, virtue, and practical wisdom. This work serves as a crucial historical counterpart to the writings of Plato, presenting Socrates as a teacher of civic and personal excellence. The collection also includes 'Oeconomicus', a pioneering treatise on household management and agriculture that explores the virtues of leadership and the division of labor. 'Symposium' depicts a lively gathering where Socrates and his companions discuss the nature of love and beauty, blending humor with philosophical inquiry. Finally, 'Apology' provides Xenophon’s perspective on the trial of Socrates, highlighting the philosopher’s unwavering commitment to his principles even in the face of death.Expertly capturing the social and moral concerns of the fourth century BCE, these works remain vital for understanding the foundations of Western thought. This collection is an indispensable resource for students of classical literature, ancient history, and moral philosophy. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
