The Colour Out of Space/异星之彩

The Colour Out of Space is a landmark horror tale blending science fiction and cosmic terror. Set in a quiet rural area west of Arkham, the story begins when a strange meteorite crashes into the garden of Nahum Gardner’s farm.At first, the object seems unusual but harmless. Yet it gradually releases a mysterious, indescribable color-something beyond human vision-that poisons the land, water, and all living things nearby. Plants grow into distorted, unnatural shapes; animals become monstrous and violent; and the Gardner family slowly descends into madness, physical decay, and death. The color is not merely a substance but an alien, otherworldly force that corrupts life itself. As locals and scientists fail to understand or stop it, the farm becomes a cursed, desolate place. The entity does not act out of malice; it is simply utterly alien, indifferent to human life.By the end, the color returns to the sky, leaving only ruin and trauma. Lovecraft uses the story to explore humanity’s powerlessness against unknown cosmic forces and the fragility of sanity and nature. It remains one of his most haunting and widely praised works, emphasizing fear of the unknowable rather than simple monsters.
