Dans cette étude, la relation entre la victimisation sexuelle, le locus de contrôle et l’adaptation a été examinée afin de déterminer l’impact sur le fonctionnement psychologique d’un échantillon d’étudiants majoritairement afro-américains fréquentant un collège et une université historiquement noirs (Historically Black College and University - HBCU). Les résultats ont montré que les participants victimes de violences sexuelles avaient des scores plus élevés en matière de dépression, d’anxiété et de consommation de drogues. En outre, il existait une relation positive significative entre l’adaptation et le fonctionnement psychologique. Cependant, les résultats n’indiquent aucune différence entre les participants victimes de violence sexuelle et les participants non victimes en ce qui concerne les mesures du locus de contrôle. La recherche n’a pas révélé que le locus de contrôle était un modérateur ni que l’adaptation africaine était un médiateur de la relation entre la victimisation sexuelle et le fonctionnement psychologique.
