Neste estudo, a relação entre a vitimização sexual, o locus de controlo e o coping foi investigada para determinar o impacto no funcionamento psicológico de uma amostra de estudantes predominantemente afro-americanos que frequentam uma faculdade e universidade historicamente negra (HBCU). Os resultados indicaram que os participantes sexualmente vitimizados tinham pontuações mais elevadas nas medidas de depressão, ansiedade e consumo de drogas. Além disso, existia uma relação positiva significativa entre o coping e o funcionamento psicológico. Contudo, os resultados não indicaram qualquer diferença entre os participantes sexualmente vitimados e os não vitimados nas medidas de locus de controlo. A investigação não encontrou o locus de controlo como moderador nem o coping africano como mediador da relação entre a vitimização sexual e o funcionamento psicológico. Estes resultados indicam que é necessária mais investigação para compreender como os afro-americanos lidam com acontecimentos traumáticos da vida e para discernir a forma como a vitimização sexual afecta o locus de controlo e o funcionamento psicológico.
