3,5 milhões de pessoas sofrem de retinite pigmentosa em todo o mundo. A retinite pigmentosa é uma doença ocular que danifica a retina. A retina é a camada de tecido na parte posterior do olho que converte imagens luminosas em sinais nervosos e os envia para o cérebro. A retinite pigmentosa pode ser hereditária. A doença pode ser causada por uma série de defeitos genéticos. De acordo com registos estatísticos, vivem 3000 pessoas com RP na Suécia e 4000 pessoas estão registadas na Associação de RP no Irão; no entanto, com base em entrevistas com doentes ativos com RP na Associação Iraniana para a Proteção das Pessoas com RP, afirma-se que, apesar destas últimas estatísticas, estima-se que 70 000 pessoas sofram de RP no Irão. O principal objetivo desta investigação é analisar os fatores que influenciam a satisfação com a vida dos doentes com RP e identificar os desafios que enfrentam na vida pessoal e social, tendo em conta as barreiras individuais, sociais, estruturais e ambientais. Além disso, são exploradas e discutidas as relações entre estes níveis de vida, a fim de explicar a opressão social e a exclusão que sofrem.
