Weltweit leiden 3,5 Millionen Menschen an Retinitis pigmentosa. Retinitis pigmentosa ist eine Augenerkrankung, die die Netzhaut schädigt. Die Netzhaut ist die Gewebeschicht im hinteren Teil des Auges, die Lichtbilder in Nervensignale umwandelt und diese an das Gehirn weiterleitet. Retinitis pigmentosa kann familiär gehäuft auftreten. Die Erkrankung kann durch eine Reihe genetischer Defekte verursacht werden. Laut statistischen Aufzeichnungen leben 3000 RP-Betroffene in Schweden und 4000 Menschen sind im RP-Verband im Iran registriert; basierend auf Interviews mit aktiven RP-Patienten im iranischen Verband zum Schutz von RP-Betroffenen wird jedoch behauptet, dass trotz der letztgenannten Statistiken schätzungsweise 70000 Menschen im Iran an RP leiden. Das Hauptziel dieser Untersuchung ist es, die Faktoren zu erforschen, die die Lebenszufriedenheit von RP-Patienten beeinflussen, und ihre Herausforderungen im persönlichen und sozialen Leben anhand individueller, sozialer, struktureller und umweltbedingter Barrieren zu ermitteln. Darüber hinaus werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen diesen Lebensbereichen untersucht und diskutiert, um ihre soziale Unterdrückung und Ausgrenzung zu erklären.
